Pipe bursting: trenchless sewer replacement in Santee
Pipe bursting replaces a sewer lateral by shattering it in place and pulling new pipe through the path it occupied. For a Santee line that is crushed, undersized or made of Orangeburg, it does what a liner cannot, and this page explains when and how.

The lateral that a liner cannot save
Some sewer lines in Santee are past lining. A clay lateral whose joints have offset so far that the camera has to climb a step at each one will fold a liner. A run that was crushed by a truck on the driveway or by a root the size of a forearm has no round interior for a liner to press against. Orangeburg, the fiber pipe used in some 1950s tracts, has deformed into an oval with blisters hanging into the flow. And a four-inch lateral serving a house that now has a second unit in the back is too small whatever its condition. For each of these, pipe bursting replaces the line along its existing path without digging a trench.
How the pull works
A fused length of high-density polyethylene pipe is prepared above ground, welded joint by joint into one continuous piece as long as the run. At the entry pit a conical bursting head is attached to the front of it and a cable or rod is run through the old pipe to the exit pit, where a hydraulic unit pulls. As the head advances it fractures the clay or splits the Orangeburg, pushing the pieces outward into the soil, and the new pipe follows directly behind. When the head emerges at the exit pit the new line is in place and is connected at the house and at the main. The old pipe is not removed; it stays in the ground as fragments around the new one. Clay breaks cleanly; cast iron is split with a bladed head; Orangeburg simply tears. The pull on a Santee lateral of ordinary length takes well under an hour once the pits are open.
Entry pit, exit pit and what lies between
The two pits are the only excavation. For a residential job in Santee the entry is normally at the foundation, where a cleanout can be built into the connection, and the exit is at the property line or at the main. Everything between them, the driveway, the patio, the lawn and the trees, is untouched. Before the pull, the crew locates other utilities crossing the run, because the head displaces soil a few inches in every direction and a water service or gas line lying against the lateral would feel it. Depth to the foundation footing is checked for the same reason, and where the lateral runs within a few feet of it the first section is sometimes excavated by hand rather than burst.
Coastal sand and inland clay
Ground conditions across San Diego County affect bursting more than they affect lining. In sandy fill near the coast, where the water table can be shallow and salty, the pits need shoring and sometimes a pump, and the loose soil absorbs the displacement from the head easily. In the expansive clay inland, the soil resists displacement and the pull takes more force, but the pits stand open without collapse. After a wet winter the clay is softer and the pull easier; in late summer it is hard and dry. Seismic settling and seasonal movement are tolerated well by HDPE because the finished pipe is a single flexible length with no joints to separate.
What the owner ends up with
A Santee owner ends up with a new pipe, often larger than the old one, with a fused interior and a design life of about fifty years, plus a cleanout at the house if there was none. The job for a single lateral is normally finished in one working day, with the drains out of service while the pull and the two connections are made. The permit from the city and the right-of-way permit for any work at the main are pulled by TSR Trenchless, Inc. and closed out after inspection. The owner receives the pre-work recording, a post-work recording of the new pipe, the permit sign-offs and a written warranty.

Questions we hear about pipe bursting
When is bursting chosen over lining in Santee?+
When the old pipe cannot host a liner or should not. Offsets large enough to fold a liner, long crushed sections, Orangeburg that has gone oval, and a lateral too small for the building all point to bursting. The method ignores the condition of the old pipe because the old pipe is destroyed rather than reused.
How big are the two pits and where do they go?+
The entry pit is large enough for the fused HDPE to bend down into the line without kinking, and the exit pit holds the pulling unit. Both are placed at the ends of the run, in planting areas or lawn wherever possible, and restored afterward. If the exit has to be at the street, an encroachment permit covers the pit in the parkway.
Does bursting disturb nearby pipes or the foundation?+
The bursting head displaces soil outward a short distance as it fractures the old pipe. Before work begins the crew locates water, gas and irrigation lines near the run and checks the distance to the foundation. In most Santee yards the lateral is far enough from other utilities for the method to proceed without adjustment; where it is not, the report says so.
Can the new pipe be bigger than the old one?+
Yes. Upsizing is one of the main reasons to choose bursting. A four-inch clay lateral serving a house that has added a bathroom or an accessory unit can be replaced with a larger HDPE pipe in the same pull. The bursting head is sized for the new diameter and the soil is displaced to make room.
How do I get a bursting job scheduled?+
Start with a camera inspection so the run can be measured and the pit locations planned. TSR Trenchless, Inc. records the line, marks the pits and the utilities, and quotes the work in writing. Call (858) 212-0070 to book the inspection at your Santee address. Estimates are free; call now.
